After being rumored for months, and 22 years after Fresno State University cut its men’s varsity water polo program, the university has announced the addition of a varsity women’s program. Athletic Director Jim Bartko made the announcement during an hour-long press conference on Thursday.

Bartko said it would be a “two to three year process” to raise appropriate funds, find a coach and sign players, though he said the fundraising could be done by as early as this summer. The new team will utilize the on-campus pool.

Bartko’s comments regarding the women’s water polo program begin at 31:40 of the video.
