OCVarsity’s Dan Albano puts it succinctly noting that the CIF-Southern Section D1 rankings are bound to change after eighth ranked Long Beach Wilson surprised number two Mater Dei in a home pool match on Tuesday. Only top-ranked Harvard-Westlake had beaten the Monarchs this season until yesterday. The Wolverines will host Mater Dei in a highly anticipated match – perhaps slightly less so after Tuesday’s result – to be streamed live next Tuesday.

Wilson has had mixed results in its first year under Head Coach Jeff Nesmith. Quality wins over Newport Harbor and current number four Corona del Mar were offset by a middle-of-the-pack finish at the recent South Coast Tournament in Irvine(which Mater Dei won). Tuesday’s victory over Mater Dei means the Bruins can expect a boost in next week’s coaches’ poll.

CIF-SS rankings are next scheduled to be updated on Monday, Oct. 13.
