The Seawolves and Otters opened the 2013 women’s collegiate season with some drama as Sonoma State outdid Cal State Monterey Bay in overtime on Friday to win 13-12. Also on Friday UC Santa Barbara bested Cal State Bakersfield by three goals at the Roadrunners’ home pool.

The key competition of the weekend is in Ann Arbor where the University of Michigan has attracted many of the top-rated squads for is annual Michigan Kick-off. There the Wolverines will debut Canadian Danielle Robinson who transferred from the now-defunct program at the University of Maryland. The 2013 season gets underway having lost both the Terrapins, and the Cougars of Chatham University in Pittsburgh, who announced it would discontinue its program last May.

While the collegiate women get under way, USA Water Polo’s Assembly continues in Los Angeles, where the proceedings will be streamed live.
