• A survey of online media recently revealed that Erie McDowell, winners of Pennsylvania state championships in 2000 and 2004, was planning to drop the sport for the 2013-2014 season. (An online petition to save the sport was quickly created). When asked about the status of the program yesterday, the school’s athletic director Brian Fuller responded in an email to TWp, “As of right now water polo is back.”
  • A familiar face has returned to the Stanford men’s water polo sideline. Dante Dettamanti is slated to assist the team this fall and is already taking part in off season workouts for the Cardinal. The eight-time NCAA champion has been installing his high motion offense at nearby Menlo-Atherton High School, which came within one goal of a CIF-CCS championship last November, for the past three years.
  • Regional competition running up to the TISCA (TX) State Championships have already begun in the East region of Houston. The Fleet Swim Center in Cypress is host to the Region II East qualifying tournament, where the top four boys’ and girls’ teams that emerge will go on to play in the state championship tournament in Southlake beginning May 3. David Fanucchi of yourtomballnews.com is there covering his local team, Tomball, as well as the other favorites, such as Cypress Creek, Jersey Village, and The Woodlands.
