It was an event not terribly common in prep water polo: a noisy record-setting crowd, live streaming with celebrity interviews, red cards, full-body leotards, and copious press coverage. Tuesday’s mid-season showdown between CIF-SS D1’s top ranked Harvard-Westlake and number two Mater Dei lived up to much of the hype. An intense, competitive, “physical” game marred by a scuffle and referee conferences, which delayed proceedings, the two squads still highlighted an elevated quality of prep water polo. The Wolverines maintained its nation’s-best reputation finishing four goals clear of Mater Dei and firmly establishing themselves as favorites to repeat as section champions.
The two teams are poised to meet again at the upcoming North-South Challenge in Atherton, October 23-24, and in the Southern Section Championship bracket in November. For more on Tuesday’s meeting, here are a few sources:
- Just two seasons ago there was little to indicate that Mater Dei wouldn’t maintain its history-making dynasty. Those fortunes have now changed, as the Daily News put it.
- The Los Angeles Times was also there with the story on the “heated” match and a video report featuring game action, clips of the raucous crowd, and post-game interviews.
- OCVarsity made the trip in to LA County as well to document the “emotionally charged” encounter.
