Forty nine seasons is apparently enough for Bill Barnett, who begins his final stanza with the Newport Harbor girls. They will travel to Coronado for their winter season opener on Saturday. Barnett spent some time looking back on his prodigious achievements with Daily Pilot Sports Editor Steve Virgen for the Newport-Mesa SportScene (starting at 31:22).

Meanwhile, the Newport Harbor boys will be under new leadership yet again in 2015 after interim head coach Marco Palazzo declined to apply for the job permanently.

“I have decided not to apply for the job. I like to coach because it is fun and I did not have fun this (high school) season,” he wrote in an e-mail to the Orange County Register.

The school was unlikely to offer Palazzo the position if he had applied for it according to people with knowledge of the situation.

The Sailors went 10-17 and nearly missed a CIF berth for the first time in decades. Former head coach Robert Lynn departed the team just a week before the fall season began under some controversy. Palazzo will remain a coach with the Newport Beach Water Polo Club.
