Former Arizona State assistant coach Robbie Bova is charting a unique path to the Olympic Games. The three-time All-American from Slippery Rock is headed to Afghanistan to coach their women’s national water polo team.

An Olympic berth is a long shot for the women of this turbulent, landlocked country. Bova has more global goals like “empowering these women through sport and finding peace through sport.” The nation has been named the most dangerous country in the world for women by TrustLaw. The US water polo community was reminded of the danger in 2014 when Lexie Kamerman, an Illinois water polo player, was killed in a terrorist bombing in Kabul.

Albuquerque’s KOB Eyewitness Sports 4 produced this feature on the coach who is widely praised for leading the growth of water polo in New Mexico and the region. She began coaching in 1999 when she formed Albuquerque Water Polo and Swim Team, and the state’s high school league a year later.
