The 2015 fall season is turning out to be much more fluid than expected in Southern California’s CIF-Southern Section.
The Harvard-Westlake boys began the prep water polo season ranked on top, aiming for another undefeated championship year. Formerly second-ranked Mater Dei inconveniently beat the Wolverines twice in recent weeks derailing Harvard’s plans and placing themselves in the very familiar top-ranked spot. Now third-ranked Loyola has upset the balance yet more by surprising the Monarchs on Wednesday, beating them 8-7 in Los Angeles.
With seedings for the Southern Section championships fast approaching next Tuesday’s rankings will be among the most interesting in years.
One other notable and mildly underreported item about the topsy rankings: four of the top 10 teams in the most recent CIF-SS rankings, including Loyola, are from Los Angeles County. Teams from the OC have long dominated the polls. The rise of programs from the “north” is a not-so-quiet point of pride for Angelinos.
Loyola added some new intrigue into Southern Section Division 1 water polo by knocking off No. 1 Santa Ana Mater Dei, 8-7, on Wednesday.
