Long time coach Steve Yancey is back in the news having led his surprising Capistrano Valley boys to a CIF Southern Section title match. The Cougars pushed aside defending champs Laguna Beach on Wednesday to earn a spot in the Division 3 final.

There they’ll face Murrieta Valley, who beat defending runners up Montebello, to gain their place in the final. More from OCVarsity.com and Dan Albano.

Stanton’s strike from about 10 meters into an upper corner sent Capistrano Valley (20-11) to the final for the first time since 1991. The Cougars lost that season in the Division 1 final to San Clemente, coached then by current Capistrano Valley coach Steve Yancey.
