Universal Sports Network is no more.
The prominent American source of water polo programming could not gain traction with viewers and was unable to ensure carriage on major distributors like Time Warner Cable. It closed its doors on Monday after its planned demise was announced in late October.
The network’s assets have been purchased by NBCUniversal which will shift Olympic sports programming to NBC Sports Network and NBC Sports Live Extra for streaming.
No water polo is currently on NBC Sports’ Olympic Sports Programming schedule.
Media-observing website AwfulAnnouncing.com speculates that the decision was likely made easier by the formation of an official Olympic Channel.
With NBC taking over the rights for the Universal Sports portfolio, it could lead to these events going to an over the top Olympic Network which is a top priority of the International Olympic Committee and could launch sometime next year. IOC partners NBC, CBC and Eurosport are to be producers for the content when the channel comes to fruition.
Content to be shared on the Olympic Network is yet to be publicized.
