As announced at the recent USA Water Polo Assembly, 15 athletes are are vying for 13 spots on the USA Senior National Team scheduled to begin play at the UANA Qualifier in Calgary beginning on January 30. Interim coach Jovan Vavic, in his first action since being selected to head the team last November, will likely have only four players with 2012 Olympic experience on the roster in Canada. Notably absent from the candidates is Tony Azevedo, who has been clear about his aspirations to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Goalkeeper Andy Stephens, one of the final cuts before the London Olympics, makes the list along with 2011 University Games veterans Griffin Lerman, Greg Enloe, Jeff Schwimer, and JP MacDonnell. Stephens’ fellow netminder Chay Lapin, who was on the 2012 London roster, was also a member of that 2011 University Games squad.
Notable newcomers include the cannon-armed Bret Bonanni, who just completed his freshman year at Stanford, and crafty driver Paul Reynolds.

Where is tony?
Where is tony?
I am not understanding what is going on here. Yes, where is Tony? and where are Varellas, Buckner, Krumpolz and most importantly Tim Hutten ??
I hear that Tony is not playing for USA but for Brazil. He has dual citizenship and heard he was pretty unhappy after London
I actually think Vavic is doing the right thing, but he didn’t have enough guts to change the team completely. After London, USA needed a big change. Tony and company are to old, and we need fresh start for the future. BTW, Tony scored a few goals in London, and didn’t help the team at all. So, I agree with him if he wants to pay with the Brazilian team.
Word from people at USA Water Polo is that Azevedo and some other 2012 Olympians are simply fulfilling their professional team obligations in Europe.
