- A frenzied last-quarter comeback attempt fell short for the Lyons Township boys as they fell to Fenwick in the championship match of the Dan Lynch Tournament on Saturday. In the Friars’ home pool the Lions fell behind, 6-2 before scoring three in a row to bring it within one. A final attempt by Lyons fell short to hand the Friars the win. With the championship and an undefeated record, Fenwick exchanged places with previously top ranked Lyons to earn illpolo.com’s number one spot this week.
- Arizona State had a signature win in Berkeley on Saturday, defeating host Cal by storming back from two goals down in the fourth quarter to win 10-9. The match was aired on the Pac-12 Network, the first ever collegiate women’s match on the cable channel. The Sun Devils then traveled to Stockton and took down Pacific 11-6 to end a short California trip making it likely ASU will maintain its third position in the CWPA poll on Wednesday.
- After a 4-0 weekend, including three wins over ranked opponents, UC San Diego are poised to rise in the collegiate polls this Wednesday. Currently ranked 17th, the Tritons got a rare win over Cal State Northridge before beating WWPA rivals UC Davis and dispatching 11th ranked Indiana at the Aztec Invitational. The undefeated weekend and two earlier wins over 14th ranked Loyola Marymount are likely to boost the Tritons’ poll position.
- St. Louis’ DeSmet Jesuit returned to Missouri this week having earned a tournament championship in Illinois on Saturday. With their 12-9 win over Waubonsie Valley the Spartans won the Lincoln-Way North Tournament title and left Illinois with only one defeat, a 22-12 loss to Fenwick.
- Spring break has arrived in Texas and Florida keeping prep matches to a minimum. One earlier result of note was The Woodlands boys dismantling defending Texas state champions Strake Jesuit 14-7 at the Spring Branch tournament on March 2. The win could signal a change in the Houston-area pecking order as Strake went undefeated in 2012.
- Huron and Dexter each earned 5-0 records at the Early Bird girls water polo tournament at East Grand Rapids this past weekend, highlighting the beginning of the Michigan girls’ high school season. Rockford, which lost one match in 2012, will look to defend its state championship title this spring.
- Gig Harbor is seeking its fourth straight Washington state championship this spring after having played in each of the past five title matches.
