In the heart of his fourth year as head coach at Santa Ana, California’s Foothill High School, Jeff Colton has abruptly resigned, according to OCVarsity.com. Foothill Principal Nick Stephany said the reasons for Colton’s resignation were “personal” without elaborating.
Colton departs as the Knights are currently ranked fourth in the CIF Division 1 rankings. Foothill recently defeated Murrieta Valley, 7-6, to earn the consolation bracket title at the Tournament of Champions in Santa Barbara, a competition stacked with some of the best teams in the country. The Knights were considered among the tournament favorites. San Clemente, Colton’s former team, shocked his current one in the competition’s first round to send favored Foothill out of the championship bracket.
Colton was hired to replace Dave Mikesell in August of 2010, taking over one of the most consistently successful girls prep programs in the US.
No word yet on a replacement.
