Tony Martinho is stepping down from his position as head coach of the storied boys’ program at Long Beach Wilson according to GazettesSports.com. The coach, who won seven CIF championships during his 15 year run, may have some higher aspirations in the game but also wants to spend more time with his family.

The Wilson alum took over the program in 1999 and coached some of the premier names in US men’s water polo, including four-time Olympian Tony Azevedo and 2012 Olympian Chay Lapin. Martinho’s Bruins returned to the CIF-Southern Section D1 Championship match in 2012 where they fell to Mater Dei.

His departure leaves open one of the most desirable positions in all of prep water polo and a traditionally strong pipeline of talent.
