Surprising Fallbrook High School beat Grossmont on Saturday to win the huge San Diego Open Tournament, featuring boys’ teams from throughout San Diego County and as far as Washington and Oregon. For their efforts the Warriors have now barged in to the Union Tribune’s top ten rankings (below) for the week of the 26th, entering the list at number seven after not getting a sniff of the top ten in the newspaper’s October 12 poll.
All the more impressive since Fallbrook has had to make the eight-mile trek to Camp Pendleton Marine Base to practice in their pool while the campus natatorium is under repair.
The tournament final was an all-San Diego affair, but not by much. The Warriors reached the finals after beating Westview 10-9 in overtime. On the opposite side, Grossmont defeated Washington state champions Bellevue, 13-10 in their semi-final matchup. The Wolverines did well for the Evergreen State, defeating fellow semifinalists Westview in an earlier round and earning the top spot in their preliminary group with three quality wins, one of which – a tussle with University City – is featured in the video above.
Fallbrook’s surprising insertion in the top ten poll was accompanied by a shift in the top three spots with Cathedral Catholic reclaiming the top spot after new No. 2 Coronado upset formerly top ranked Bishop’s last week.
